One million seeds in Arctic vault
Barely two years after it opened, a unique Arctic doomsday stockpile of all the world's crop seeds has reached the half-million species mark.
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is about a thousand kilometres from the North Pole.
It's now received a mold-resistant wild bean from Costa Rica, a vulnerable strawberry from a bear-infested part of Russia's Kuril islands and a host of American soybeans.
Global Crop Diversity Trust executive director Cary Fowler says the latest additions show the vault is now the gold standard for diversity.
But he says it comes at a time when the world's agriculture systems are sitting on a knife's edge.
