Food crisis needs "desperate" action: AUS

The cost of staple and healthy food is soaring beyond affordable levels for more than 400,000 NSW residents, according to the Sydney Food Fairness Alliance (SFFA).
 
The number is set to increase as climate change cuts crop yields and urban expansion consumes agricultural land close to urban settlements.

The SFFA says it aims to address the emerging challenge at the Food Summit 2009 in Sydney on October 22 and 23.

"The urgency of the issue is reinforced by the UN sponsored World Food Day occurring on October 16, the theme of which is achieving food security in times of crisis," said SFFA spokesperson, Elizabeth Millen.

“The challenges posed by climate change, oil depletion, urban sprawl and obesity present the greatest threat to our food production and distribution system in our history. Creative solutions are desperately needed to ensure access to healthy food now and for future generations.

"We call on the government to work with business and the community to establish a food policy council as a matter of urgency.”
