If we had tuck shop there was a choice of meat pies, sausage rolls, cream buns, chocolate eclairs and vanilla slices. On my way home from school we would stop at the local fish and chip shop and buy hot chips and smother the whole lot in salt and vinegar. What was interesting is that all of the girls I went to school with, (there were around 600 of us), I only remember one girl being obese. No one had a weight problem or even talked about their weight. There was no asthma, allergies (we were allowed to take peanut butter sandwiches to school), autism, asperger's, ADD, ADHD or diabetes.

    The scenario is very different now. If a tuck shop served what we had in the 60’s ad 70’s they would be shut down. If parents served cake, dessert and goodies all the time they would be seen as neglectful in their food choices.  

    It is only 30 years since the end of the 70’s yet times have changed so very much. And many of you are probably saying yes but we were more active then. Well I hate to differ but there has been research done where they have found the activity levels of children in the 60’s and 70’s is much the same as the activity levels now. So the problem must be the food.

    Let me explain. When I ate a chocolate eclair in the 60’s and 70’s it was made with real food, real chocolate, real cream, real butter, real flour and it lasted no more than a day or two. The chocolate eclair these days is made with hydrogenated vegetable oil, chocolate colouring, chocolate flavouring, fake cream, preservatives, and additives flavourings. In fact the ingredient list would add up to well over 50 ingredients if we take in all the ingredients (chemicals) in flavourings and would last perhaps 3 weeks maybe longer.

    Both chocolate eclairs look the same but fundamentally they are not. One is a real food and one is a totally artificial food.

    For thousands of years we have eaten the same foods;  fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, herbs, spices, meats, fish, chicken, eggs, legumes and dairy. We have used these foods to make everything from a lamb roast to a chocolate eclair. Then came the 80’s when science and technology decided they could make food better by changing the components of food (carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals) to make food perfect. So they made soya protein isolate, margarine, modified milks, artificial sweeteners, additives, colours, preservatives, and hydrogenated vegetable oil, the list is endless. Now instead of us eating normal foods we are eating foods made in a chemical laboratory.  

    The proof is in the pudding that changing the food supply from natural to chemical has produced a population of people who statistically are fatter and sicker then they have ever been. They say we are living longer but we are also living sicker and less energetic lives.
